Professor Hawthorne qualified from Oxford University in 1984, and completed her GP training in Nottingham in 1988. She has a special interest in medical education, having worked at Cardiff University and the University of Surrey, keeping up her GP work alongside her academic work.
Her MBE was awarded for 'Services to General Practice'.
Until recently, Professor Hawthorne was vice-chair of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
